My dad is very picky when it comes to desserts but if it's tiramisu or black forest cake he will indulge! So for his birthday I decided to try and surprise him with a homemade cake!
I normally go for boxed cake mix but I wanted to attempt making it from scratch so I looked up "easy" black forest cakes and landed on a recipe that didn't seem too hard! It was totally worth it! The cake definitely was a lot more moist than boxed cake mix and it had a much lighter texture.
The only thing I didn't make from scratch was the whipped cream topping. I was too nervous it wouldn't peak enough to spread all over the cake, and since I knew my dad likes Cool Whip, I went with that instead!
All in all, it wasn't too hard to make! The hardest part is cutting the cake in half but my friend let me borrow her cake cutter (see picture below) which made it so much easier to keep the layers close to even! If you plan on making cakes more than once, I highly recommend buying one!
This is the cake cutter I used but you can also used a serrated knife, just go slowly to avoid the
cake breaking.
The recipe called for four layers but I ended up just making it a two layer cake and using the second cake to make an all chocolate version for the kids. So we ended up with two cakes from one recipe! 😁
- I used Cool Whip for the frosting
- I used a grater to make the chocolate shavings but you can also use a sharp knife. Just be super careful! A knife will give you longer pieces but the grater was much easier to use (see videos below)
The Black Forest cake was two layers with the cherries in the middle too!
The kids loved the all chocolate version! I added chocolate shavings in between the layers.
