Whenever we want to spread some cheer to friends and family, my kids and I like to bake yummy treats! We usually make M&M cookie bars (I'll share that another time!) but I found a new recipe for Cinnamon rolls that I wanted to try! Kids love it for dessert and it goes great with coffee (I had a piece for breakfast this morning.) 😋
What caught my eye for this recipe is it's in a cake form and you can use pre-made cake mix so it was right up my alley. Plus, my daughter was home so I wanted to try something where she could help out too. The recipe title even said "easy" so what was there to mess up?
The cake part was very easy but I had a little trouble with swirling in the cinnamon sugar, and making the icing, so it didn't look as appetizing as the pictures from the original recipe. I contemplated whether or not to even give it to our friends since it didn't look so tasty but I reminded myself, something can be imperfect and still turn out great! We all had a taste and it was so delicious! Everyone wanted seconds!
Remember, looks can be deceiving. Whenever you cook or bake, it may not look exactly the same as the original recipe (or in my case completely different!) but just remind yourself...It doesn't have to look good to taste good!
Here is the recipe with a few of the "mistakes" I made:
- The recipe said to evenly spread the cinnamon sugar on top of the cake mix then gently swirl. I couldn't get the sugar to seep into the cake mix so the majority stayed on the top. I honestly don't know what I could have done differently but I used a thinner 9x13 pan so it still had plenty of cinnamon crumbs in every bite.
-For the icing, it calls for 3 tbsp. of milk but after mixing it with the powdered sugar it was very sticky and hard so I added another tablespoon to make it a little softer. As you can see in my photos, it still was not "oozing" so I tried to use a butter knife to spread it. That definitely made it look less appetizing but it was still super tasty!
Enjoy!
This is what the cake looked like after I attempted to "fix" the frosting.
It actually looked much better after you cut it up. 😄
